A Basket Metaphor for Nursing

B. H. (Cricket) Rose, R.N., M.Ed., M.S.N.

University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio

The metaphor of basketry is applied to two frameworks for nursing practice: the totality paradigm and the simultaneity paradigm. With descriptions of two baskets, a contrast is drawn between the philosophies of nursing related to the two paradigms. The practice of nursing with respect to both worldviews is illustrated by the patterns, the colors, and the shapes of the weaving of each basket.
